FAQs about Scout

Scout is usually delivered ready to go out of the box. You can switch on and start scanning. Location will generally be set appropriately before shipping but otherwise it’s a quick toggle to ensure Scout is ready to find frequencies in your region. You can adjust the range or sensitivity by simply sliding the sensitivity icon up or down.
Occasionally you may find that you are detecting interference signals which are emitted from sources other than a phone. These can come from electrical equipment such as old wiring, computer monitors, microwave ovens, communication equipment or cell towers/cellular base stations.
If a signal is appearing from a location that is not occupied, or is very persistent with little or no fluctuations, you may find after some investigation that this is an interference signal. Finding the source and recording the frequencies of these signals is an important step towards dealing with them so that you can filter them out.

Once you have identified a frequency that is interference you can simply switch that frequency off in your Settings menu.

Scout has a very wide range of sensitivities that can take the range from around 6 feet all the way to almost half a mile!

If you want to perform a wide search of an area, you may want to set the Scout to be very sensitive and then reduce the sensitivity as you get closer to the cellphone signal.

By increasing attenuation (reducing sensitivity) at the start of your search you can restrict the Scout to only detect phones in the area you are searching and not pick up signals beyond the walls. This can help if e.g. prison wings are close together or next to a public area where phones are allowed.
By finding the sensitivity/attenuation setting that gives you around 20-30 feet of range you can walk around the facility with Scout in a hand or pocket and when a vibration alert is felt the settings can be adjusted to pin point the cellphone use.

When carrying out a physical cell search, the Scout can be made very insensitive and moved around the area from point to point. If the cellphone is still turned on and emitting a signal, the Scout RSSI will peak when it is closest to the device.
